A Texas Craft Beer Original Says Goodbye: Southern Star Brewing Company to Close After 18 Years
After nearly two decades of pouring pints, hosting live music, and helping shape Texas’ craft beer identity, Southern Star Brewing Company is preparing to close its doors.
The Conroe-based brewery announced it will officially cease operations on June 28, marking the end of an 18-year run that left a lasting imprint not only on Montgomery County, but on the entire Texas craft beer scene.
A True Pioneer in Texas Craft Beer
Southern Star holds a unique place in state beer history. Founded in 2007, it became the first brewery in Texas to can craft beer, helping normalize canned craft long before it became the industry standard. At a time when Texas’ brewery landscape was still in its infancy, Southern Star helped pave the way for the explosion of local breweries Houstonians enjoy today.
Beyond the beer itself, the brewery built a reputation for being a true community hub—welcoming families, hosting charity events, showcasing local bands, and creating a laid-back environment that made it feel more like a neighborhood gathering place than a production facility.
More Than a Brewery
For many Houston-area residents, Southern Star wasn’t just somewhere to grab a beer. It was where first dates happened, friendships formed, and weekends were spent listening to live music with a cold pint in hand. Its sprawling taproom and outdoor space made it a destination, especially for those willing to make the short drive north of Houston.
Over the years, Southern Star’s beers became staples at local bars, festivals, and backyard gatherings—quietly becoming part of everyday life for craft beer fans across the region.
The End of an Era
While closures are never easy, Southern Star’s announcement has sparked an outpouring of memories and appreciation from longtime patrons. Its June 28 closing date gives fans one last chance to visit, raise a glass, and say goodbye to a place that helped define Texas craft beer culture.
As Houston’s brewery scene continues to evolve, Southern Star’s legacy will remain firmly etched into its foundation.
Share the Memories
If Southern Star was part of your story—your first brewery tour, your favorite live show, or your go-to weekend hangout—now’s the time to share those memories and give the team the sendoff they deserve.
