Could Whataburger Be Coming to Houston’s Heights? A New Project Points to Yale Street

Houston’s Heights may soon have another late-night dining option—and this one could come with a familiar orange-and-white sign.

A project registered with the State of Texas shows plans to convert the former Taco Cabana at 167 Yale Street into a Whataburger location. According to the project filing, construction could begin in late October, with completion targeted for late March.

There’s just one important catch: the Whataburger hasn’t been officially confirmed yet.

A New Whataburger for the Heights?

The proposed project would bring Whataburger to a highly visible stretch of Yale Street, replacing the former Taco Cabana property.

For Heights residents, the location could be particularly convenient. Yale Street runs through one of Houston’s most active and rapidly changing neighborhoods, with a mix of residential developments, restaurants, retail and nightlife nearby.

If the project moves forward as outlined, the new restaurant would also add something the area can always use: another late-night drive-thru option.

And in Houston, where late-night food is practically its own food group, that could be welcome news.

When Could Construction Begin?

The project filing lists a potential construction start in late October, with an anticipated completion date in late March.

Those dates should be viewed as targets rather than guarantees. Construction schedules can change, and a project appearing in state records doesn't necessarily mean the restaurant is officially announced or that construction will happen exactly as planned.

For now, the proposal is best described as a possible Whataburger—not a confirmed one.

What This Could Mean for the Heights

The Heights has continued to see significant development and changes in its restaurant and retail scene, making a new Whataburger an interesting addition to the neighborhood.

For some residents, the appeal will be simple: burgers, fries and a drive-thru without having to venture far from home.

For others, the bigger question may be what the addition means for an area that has experienced plenty of commercial growth in recent years.

Either way, if the project comes to fruition, the former Taco Cabana site on Yale could soon have a very different look—and a lot more late-night traffic.
