Din Tai Fung Could Be Coming to Houston’s Galleria in 2027
Houston’s dining scene may soon welcome one of the world’s best-known Taiwanese restaurant brands. Din Tai Fung, the internationally recognized restaurant famous for its soup dumplings, appears to be moving toward a potential location at The Galleria, though an official opening announcement has not yet been made.
According to a state filing, the proposed restaurant would occupy nearly 17,000 square feet in the space previously occupied by Nobu. The filing lists a potential construction start in February 2027, offering an early indication of the project's possible timeline.
If the plans move forward, this would be Houston’s first Din Tai Fung, giving local diners a chance to experience a restaurant that has built a global following around its dumplings and Taiwanese cuisine.
What Is Din Tai Fung Known For?
Founded in Taiwan, Din Tai Fung has grown into an internationally recognized restaurant group with locations across several countries. Its reputation is closely tied to its xiao long bao, or soup dumplings, which contain seasoned filling and hot broth inside delicate dough wrappers.
The dumplings are carefully prepared, with an emphasis on consistent folding, texture, and flavor. Din Tai Fung is also known for its open-kitchen environments at many locations, where diners can watch chefs prepare dumplings by hand.
Although soup dumplings are the restaurant's signature item, the menu typically includes a broader selection of Taiwanese and Chinese dishes, such as noodles, fried rice, vegetable dishes, and other dumpling varieties.
For Houston diners familiar with the brand from trips to other major cities, a local location could make these dishes more accessible without the need to travel out of town.
What We Know About the Proposed Galleria Location
The potential restaurant is planned for a nearly 17,000-square-foot space at The Galleria, one of Houston's major shopping and dining destinations. The space was previously occupied by Nobu.
The state filing identifies February 2027 as a potential construction start date. However, that date should not be interpreted as a confirmed opening date. Construction timelines can change, and additional details about the project have not yet been officially announced.
Key details to watch include the final restaurant design, construction schedule, menu, pricing, and anticipated opening date.
Why The Galleria Could Be a Strategic Location
The Galleria draws shoppers, office workers, hotel guests, and visitors from across Greater Houston. Adding a globally recognized restaurant brand could further expand the area's dining options and give diners another reason to visit beyond shopping.
A Din Tai Fung location would also join an established mix of restaurants serving different cuisines and price points. For a restaurant with an international following, the location could appeal to both longtime fans and Houston residents trying the brand for the first time.
Its large proposed footprint may also allow room for a substantial dining operation, although seating capacity and the final layout have not been confirmed.
When Could Din Tai Fung Open in Houston?
For now, Houston diners will need to wait for an official announcement. The state filing points to a potential construction start in February 2027, but it does not confirm when the restaurant would welcome its first guests.
Until the company or property representatives release more information, the project remains a proposed addition rather than a confirmed opening.
Still, the possibility of Din Tai Fung coming to The Galleria is noteworthy for Houston's food scene. If the plans proceed, local diners could soon have a new destination for soup dumplings and other Taiwanese favorites.
