Houston Rodeo Breaks Ground on The Farm: Here’s What’s Coming to Highway 288

Houston's relationship with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is about to get a whole lot bigger.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has officially broken ground on The Farm, a massive new agricultural complex along Highway 288 near Airport Boulevard.

The $300 million project will span more than 1 million square feet and is expected to open in 2029. It represents the largest single facilities investment in the organization's history.

And despite the size of the new development, there's one important thing Houston residents should know:

The Farm isn't replacing Reliant Park.

Instead, it will create a second campus for the Rodeo, giving the organization more space for livestock, horse shows, agricultural education, youth programs and events throughout the year.

So, What Exactly Is The Farm?

The name might sound simple, but there's a meaning behind it.

The Farm stands for “Furthering our Agriculture and Ranching Mission.”

The name was selected through a community-driven process. Rodeo volunteers submitted ideas, and the public voted on the finalists.

The result is a name that connects the new complex directly to the organization's focus on agriculture, ranching, education and Texas' Western heritage.

And the facility itself is anything but small.

The Farm will include more than 1 million square feet of new space, including livestock and equestrian facilities and a new 5,000-seat arena.

Where Is The Farm Being Built?

The new complex is being developed on approximately 350 acres of Rodeo-owned property along Highway 288, near Reed Road and Airport Boulevard.

It's only a few miles south of the Rodeo's longtime home at Reliant Park, creating what will effectively become a two-campus operation.

For Houstonians who regularly travel Highway 288, that means a major new development will soon become part of the landscape in an area already experiencing significant growth.

What Will Happen at The Farm?

The new campus is being designed primarily around agriculture, livestock and equestrian activities.

Planned uses include:

• Livestock competitions and events

• Horse shows and equestrian competitions

• Agricultural education programs

• Youth programming

• Archery competitions

• Agricultural mechanics events

• Auctions and other agricultural activities

• Community and year-round events

The complex will also provide space for Rodeo activities outside of the annual March event, including educational programs, committee meetings, fundraisers, auctions and other events.

That year-round component is an important part of the project.

Rather than having the facilities sit largely unused outside of Rodeo season, The Farm is intended to become an active destination throughout the year.

What Happens to the Rodeo at Reliant Park?

For anyone wondering whether this means the Houston Rodeo is leaving Reliant Park, the answer is no.

The Farm is being developed as an expansion, not a relocation.

Reliant Park will remain the Rodeo's longtime home, with the annual event continuing there. The new campus will take on additional livestock, horse and agricultural programming, while major elements of the Rodeo experience—including concerts and the carnival—will remain at Reliant Park.

When the 2029 Rodeo arrives, programming is expected to take place across both campuses.

That means Houston could eventually have two major Rodeo destinations operating simultaneously during the event's busiest time of year.

The new complex is about more than adding buildings.
