Kroger Breaks Ground on First New Houston-Area Store in Nearly 10 Years

by Katie Day

Kroger is preparing to expand its presence in the Greater Houston area with a major new grocery store in Hockley. The company recently broke ground on a $41 million Kroger Marketplace, marking its first new store construction in the Houston region in nearly a decade.

The project is expected to bring a larger-format grocery shopping destination to the growing Hockley community, with an anticipated opening in early 2028. The development is also part of a broader plan to build additional Kroger stores in the Houston area.

A $41 Million Kroger Marketplace Is Coming to Hockley

The new Hockley location will be a Kroger Marketplace, a larger store format that typically combines a full-service grocery department with additional shopping categories and services.

Unlike a traditional neighborhood grocery store, Marketplace locations are designed to provide customers with more options under one roof. Depending on the location, these stores may include expanded fresh-food departments, household products, apparel, electronics, and other general merchandise.

The $41 million investment represents a significant addition to the area's retail landscape. For residents in Hockley and nearby Waller, the store could provide another convenient option for everyday shopping as the northwest Houston corridor continues to grow.

Construction officially began in late October 2026, with the store currently targeting an early 2028 opening.

Kroger's First New Houston-Area Store in Nearly a Decade

The Hockley project is notable because it marks Kroger's first new store construction in the Houston area in almost 10 years.

While Kroger has continued operating and serving customers throughout the region, this new development signals renewed investment in physical store expansion. The company has also indicated that more Houston-area locations are planned beyond the Hockley project.

Specific sites, construction schedules, and opening dates for those future stores have not yet been detailed, but the announcement could point to additional grocery retail growth across the region.

What the New Store Could Mean for Hockley and Waller

Hockley has been attracting attention as development continues across northwest Harris County and nearby Waller County. As more people move into the area, demand for grocery stores, restaurants, and other everyday services is also growing.

A new Kroger Marketplace could help meet some of that demand while adding another retail destination for nearby communities. It may also give residents more choices for grocery shopping without having to travel as far for a wider selection of products.

With construction underway and an early 2028 opening target, the project is one to watch as the Hockley area continues to develop.

For residents in Hockley and Waller, the question is simple: Are you excited to see Kroger bring a new Marketplace store to the area?
