Merit Coffee’s Heights Location Gets a Construction Timeline
Houston’s Heights coffee scene is getting another addition—and this one now has a clearer timeline.
Merit Coffee is moving forward with a new location at 621 Waverly Street, inside the Swift development in the Heights. A project registered with the state lists a $900,000 build-out, with construction scheduled to begin this month and a target completion date in January.
If that timeline holds, early 2027 could be when Heights residents finally get their first chance to visit the new Merit Coffee location.
For anyone who has been watching the Swift development take shape, this is one more piece of the neighborhood’s growing lineup of restaurants, coffee shops and retail destinations.
Merit Coffee Is Coming to Swift
The new Merit Coffee will be located at 621 Waverly Street, within Swift, a mixed-use development in Houston’s Heights.
The project filing puts the estimated construction cost at approximately $900,000, giving the project a substantial build-out rather than a simple refresh of an existing space.
Construction is expected to get underway in September 2026, with the project targeting completion in January 2027.
That doesn't necessarily mean the doors will open the day construction wraps up. Businesses typically have additional work to complete after a build-out, including equipment installation, inspections, staffing and other preparations.
Still, a January construction completion target makes an early 2027 opening a reasonable expectation.
Why This Location Matters for the Heights
Merit Coffee has built a following in Houston, and adding a location in the Heights puts the brand in one of the city's most active and walkable neighborhood areas.
For nearby residents, the appeal is pretty straightforward: another neighborhood coffee option within the Swift development.
But the bigger story is what the project says about the continued evolution of the area.
The Heights has become one of Houston's most recognizable destinations for independent restaurants, retail, entertainment and food-and-beverage concepts. New developments like Swift are adding another layer to that transformation by bringing additional commercial space into the neighborhood.
A new coffee shop may seem like a relatively small addition, but these everyday amenities can have a noticeable impact on how residents use and experience their neighborhood.
What to Expect Next
For now, the next milestone is construction.
The state-registered project calls for work to begin in September, followed by a targeted completion in January. Assuming construction stays on schedule, the first few months of 2027 could bring the final steps toward opening.
Of course, construction schedules can change, so the January date should be viewed as a target rather than a guaranteed opening date.
But for Heights residents who have been waiting for Merit Coffee to arrive at Swift, there is finally a little more certainty.
The coffee shop isn't just planned—it now has a construction timeline.
And if everything stays on track, you could be ordering your first Merit Coffee in the Heights sometime in early 2027.
