Old Kroger on Katy Freeway Is Becoming a Sprouts Farmers Market
A familiar grocery store location on Houston’s west side is getting a new life.
The former Kroger at 9325 Katy Freeway in Hedwig Village is being transformed into a Sprouts Farmers Market, bringing the growing grocery chain to the Echo Lane shopping center.
Construction is already underway, and the new store is expected to open in 2027.
For residents in Memorial, Spring Branch and the surrounding neighborhoods, the project means another grocery option is on the way — and it’s part of a much larger expansion by Sprouts across the Houston area.
A New Sprouts Is Coming to Hedwig Village
The future Sprouts will occupy the former Kroger space at the Echo Lane shopping center, located along the Katy Freeway.
The location is particularly convenient for residents who live in and around Memorial and Spring Branch, putting the grocery store along one of the area's busiest corridors.
While an exact opening date has not been announced, 2027 is confirmed as the target opening year.
Construction is already underway at the site, so the transformation is beginning to take shape.
Sprouts Is Expanding Across Houston
The Hedwig Village location isn't an isolated project.
Sprouts Farmers Market has been expanding its presence throughout the Houston region, with new stores planned or opening in several communities.
One of the most notable upcoming locations is in The Woodlands, where a new Sprouts is expected to open next month.
That expansion reflects the growing presence of the specialty grocery chain in the Houston market and gives shoppers more options for fresh produce, natural and organic foods, bulk items and other specialty groceries.
For Houston residents, the growing number of locations could make Sprouts a more convenient option depending on where they live and shop.
What Happens to the Old Kroger Location?
The redevelopment is also significant because it gives a longtime grocery-store space a new purpose.
The former Kroger location had been a recognizable part of the Katy Freeway corridor, and converting the space rather than leaving it vacant brings new activity to the Echo Lane shopping center.
For nearby residents, the biggest change will simply be having a new grocery destination in the neighborhood.
And because the store is located directly along Katy Freeway, it could also attract shoppers from outside Hedwig Village and the immediate Memorial area.
When Will the New Sprouts Open?
The new Sprouts Farmers Market is expected to open in 2027.
Construction is currently underway, but an exact opening date has not yet been announced.
So if you live in Memorial, Spring Branch, Hedwig Village or nearby neighborhoods, this is one Houston-area development worth keeping on your radar.
The old Kroger on Katy Freeway is getting a new identity — and soon, residents will have another grocery option right in the neighborhood.
