Picos Reopens in River Oaks After Closing Its Upper Kirby Location
Houston restaurant fans don't have to say goodbye to Picos after all.
The longtime Mexican restaurant has reopened in a new location in River Oaks, just weeks after closing its Upper Kirby restaurant. Chef and owner Arnaldo Richards brought Picos back on September 12 at 3736 Westheimer Road, taking over the space that previously housed Cyclone Anaya's.
The move came together through a last-minute partnership with The Dhanani Group, giving the Houston restaurant a new home while allowing Richards to keep the Picos concept going.
Picos Has a New Home on Westheimer
The new Picos occupies the former Cyclone Anaya's space along Westheimer Road, putting the restaurant in one of Houston's best-known dining corridors.
For longtime Picos customers, the move doesn't mean starting over with an entirely new concept. Richards has brought back many of the elements that made Picos a Houston favorite, including its Mexican menu, signature moles and shaker margaritas.
The restaurant's return also comes relatively quickly after the closure of its Upper Kirby location.
Picos closed its restaurant there at the end of August, leaving some Houston diners wondering whether the longtime concept would return. The answer came less than two weeks later when the new River Oaks location opened its doors on September 12.
A Familiar Menu in a New Neighborhood
While the address has changed, Picos is keeping its focus on the food and drinks that longtime customers know.
The restaurant is known for its Mexican cuisine and extensive selection of regional dishes, with Richards bringing a chef-driven approach to traditional Mexican flavors. Its signature moles remain part of the menu, along with its shaker margaritas.
That continuity could make the River Oaks location an easier transition for regulars who were accustomed to dining at the Upper Kirby restaurant.
At the same time, the move puts Picos closer to the restaurants, shops and entertainment venues that make the Westheimer and River Oaks area a popular destination for Houston diners.
Picos' Return Adds Another Restaurant to the River Oaks Area
The reopening comes during a period of continued change along Houston's restaurant scene, with established concepts moving, reopening and finding new locations throughout the city.
For Picos, the new River Oaks address provides an opportunity to continue its Houston presence while moving into a space that already has a history as a neighborhood restaurant.
The restaurant's quick return is also notable given how recently the Upper Kirby location closed. Rather than remaining closed indefinitely, Picos was able to secure a new location and reopen within a matter of weeks.
For customers who were wondering whether they'd get another chance to order their favorite Picos dishes, that wait is already over.
Picos is now open at 3736 Westheimer Road in River Oaks.
