The Hobby Center Plans to Transform Founders Club Into a Jazz Club by 2028

by Katie Day

Houston’s performing arts scene could soon have a new destination for live music, dinner, and drinks. The Hobby Center for the Performing Arts is planning to turn its existing Founders Club into an intimate jazz venue, creating a new kind of night-out experience in downtown Houston.

The proposed venue is part of a larger $45 million fundraising campaign and is expected to accommodate approximately 160 guests. Rather than a traditional concert hall, the space is being envisioned as a more intimate setting where visitors can enjoy live jazz alongside food and drinks.

An Intimate Jazz Experience in Downtown Houston

The planned jazz club would occupy the Founders Club, an existing space inside the Hobby Center. The redesign is expected to introduce an Art Deco-inspired interior, giving the venue a distinctive atmosphere that complements its focus on live jazz.

With seating for around 160 people, the space would offer a more personal alternative to larger performance venues. The concept also includes dinner and drinks, making it possible for guests to enjoy a full evening out without having to plan separate stops for entertainment and dining.

Performances are expected to run approximately 75 to 90 minutes. That format could make the venue especially appealing for date nights, after-work outings, or evenings with friends.

Part of the Hobby Center’s $45 Million Campaign

The proposed jazz club is connected to the Hobby Center’s broader $45 million campaign. The investment is intended to support the organization’s future, with the Founders Club conversion serving as one of the planned enhancements.

The project is currently targeting 2028. While that timeline gives Houston residents something to look forward to, additional details about the final design, programming, dining options, and ticketing have yet to be confirmed.

A New Option for Houston Date Nights

If completed as planned, the jazz club could add another entertainment option to downtown Houston's growing lineup of cultural and dining destinations.

Its smaller capacity, Art Deco design, live performances, and dinner-and-drinks concept could make it a different kind of night out compared with a typical theater show or restaurant reservation. For jazz fans, it could also provide a dedicated place to enjoy live music in a more intimate environment.

The idea raises an interesting question for Houston residents: Would you make a 160-seat jazz club at the Hobby Center your next date-night destination?
