Houston’s Convention Scene is Getting a $1B Makeover: Here's What We Know

Downtown Houston is about to see one of its most ambitious projects yet. The George R. Brown Convention Center (GRB) already a cornerstone of the city’s event landscape is gearing up for a $1 billion expansion that will reshape the way Houston hosts conventions, expos, and global gatherings.
What’s Coming
- The project will add nearly 700,000 square feet of new space, including:
- Expansive ballrooms designed to host world-class galas and large-scale conferences
- State-of-the-art exhibit halls that can accommodate bigger and more diverse events
- Public plazas and gathering spaces that connect the convention center more seamlessly to downtown’s growing urban fabric
Together, these upgrades aim to not only serve event-goers but also create more walkable, vibrant public spaces for Houstonians.
Timeline and Phasing
The first phase, budgeted at $138 million, is scheduled to begin this December and wrap up in 2028. That’s just the opening chapter of a long-term vision to elevate GRB into one of the most competitive convention destinations in the U.S.
City leaders project the expansion will generate a staggering $20 billion in economic impact over the next 30 years. That means more hotel bookings, restaurant traffic, small business growth, and international visibility for Houston.
For residents, it also signals the city’s push to position itself as a global events hub — competing with destinations like Las Vegas, Orlando, and Chicago. And unlike many large-scale infrastructure projects, this one has a clear, measurable return: conventions bring hundreds of thousands of visitors (and their wallets) to the city every year.
This expansion builds on a wave of investment in downtown Houston, from Discovery Green to new hotels and residential developments. Taken together, these projects are transforming the area into a true live-work-play district — one where Houstonians can feel the benefits of growth in their own neighborhoods.
