Shipley Do-Nuts Has a New Owner But the Houston Favorite Isn’t Going Anywhere

by Katie Day

A beloved Texas-born institution is entering a new chapter.

Shipley Do-Nuts, the iconic Houston-based donut chain founded in 1936, has officially been acquired by new owners — but fans of the "world’s greatest donut" can breathe easy. The new California-based ownership group has no plans to slow the brand’s growth. In fact, expansion is very much on the menu.

A Sweet Legacy with Ambitious Plans

With over 375 locations across the U.S., Shipley Do-Nuts has long held a special place in the hearts (and breakfast routines) of Houstonians. Known for its melt-in-your-mouth glazed donuts, kolaches, and classic coffee shop charm, Shipley’s has grown from a single store in Houston to a national name with deep Southern roots.
The new ownership aims to carry that tradition forward while bringing Shipley’s to even more communities nationwide. And while leadership may be shifting west, the spirit of Shipley Do-Nuts remains proudly Texan.

What’s Next for the Brand?

According to company statements, the focus is on thoughtful expansion, both in existing markets and new regions, without compromising the quality or hometown feel that built Shipley’s loyal following.

That could mean more stores popping up in places like California, Florida, and beyond, while Houston remains the heart and soul of the brand.

Local Reaction

While some long-time fans may feel uneasy about a change in ownership, early signs suggest this move is about scale, not reinvention. The menu favorites, neighborhood feel, and nostalgic brand identity are staying intact—just with more reach and resources.
