Texas Is One of the Most Expensive States for Speeding: Here’s What Houston Drivers Need to Know

Heads up, Houston: your lead foot could cost you more than ever before.
A new report has put Texas in the hot seat when it comes to pricey speeding fines. We officially rank 4th most expensive in the nation for speeding tickets — with the average fine for going just 10 mph over the limit clocking in at around $223.
That means a quick slip of the gas pedal could put a serious dent in your wallet, not to mention the points on your license and a spike in your insurance premium.
How Texas Compares
Only six states charge over $200 for a 15-mph-over ticket and Texas is firmly on that list. For perspective: some states charge closer to $50–$100 for the same infraction. So while we love our wide-open roads, that freedom can come with a steep price if you’re not paying attention to your speedometer.
What This Means for Houston Drivers
In a city as sprawling as Houston where long commutes and fast-moving freeways are the norm, it’s easy to find yourself a few miles per hour over the limit. But those few miles can add up fast.
Speed traps and stricter enforcement on major routes like I-10, I-45, the West Loop, and Beltway 8 mean it pays to stay cautious. Plus, the city’s push for Vision Zero (reducing traffic deaths to zero) could mean even more enforcement in high-risk areas.
The Hidden Costs
Beyond the initial fine, a speeding ticket in Texas can raise your insurance premium by hundreds of dollars per year. For frequent drivers or commuters, that single moment of rushing could add up to thousands over time.
Drive Smart, Houston
Whether you’re heading out to Galveston for the weekend, zipping down the Katy Freeway, or stuck in 610 traffic, it’s worth remembering: a heavier foot isn’t worth the extra expense or the risk.
