Could This Be the Future of Neighborhood Living in Houston? Here's What We Know

by Katie Day

In a city as big and spread out as Houston, finding a true sense of community can feel like a challenge. But one new neighborhood aims to change that — and it’s not your typical cul-de-sac.

CoHousing Houston, the city’s first-ever cohousing community, is officially coming to life in Eastwood. Think 33 private homes clustered around shared gardens, courtyards, and a common house designed for potlucks, movie nights, and everyday connection.

What Is Cohousing, Anyway?

Cohousing is a model that flips the script on how we usually think about suburban living. Instead of driveways and fences that keep us apart, cohousing creates built-in opportunities to gather, collaborate, and support each other, whether that’s through group dinners, spontaneous babysitting swaps, or shared decision-making about the neighborhood’s direction.

You’ll still own your own home, but you’ll also co-own shared spaces, pitch in on community tasks, and actually know your neighbors.

It’s not a new concept globally (Denmark pioneered it decades ago), but this is Houston’s first foray into modern cohousing — and it’s drawing interest from families, singles, retirees, and anyone craving more connection close to the city’s core.

Where It’s Happening — and What It Costs

CoHousing Houston is taking shape in Eastwood, one of the city’s historic neighborhoods just east of downtown. The site plan includes 33 homes ranging from the low $300Ks to over $500K, designed with wide front porches and walkways that invite conversation, not isolation.

At the center of it all is a spacious common house, where residents can cook meals together, hold meetings, or just hang out. Gardens, green space, and outdoor play areas bring extra room for families to grow and neighbors to gather.

Why It Matters

Houston has long been known for big yards and bigger commutes — but for some, the trade-off has been a sense of disconnection. As more Houstonians look for ways to live closer in, share resources, and build stronger neighborhood ties, projects like CoHousing Houston are part of a national trend reimagining how community can look in the 21st century.

Could it be the future of urban living here? Time will tell, but for now, it’s planting new roots in a city ready for fresh ways to connect.
