Proposed Izakaya Wa Restaurant Could Bring a New Japanese Gastropub to West Houston
Residents in Houston's Memorial area may soon have a new destination for Japanese cuisine.
According to a recently filed state permit, Izakaya Wa is planning a new location on Briar Forest Drive. While the restaurant has not officially announced the project, the filing suggests the Japanese gastropub could expand into west Houston, adding another dining option to one of the city's busiest corridors.
If the project moves forward, it would introduce a menu centered around sushi, Japanese small plates, and the relaxed, social atmosphere that izakaya-style restaurants are known for.
What Is an Izakaya?
Originating in Japan, an izakaya is often described as a casual gastropub where guests gather to enjoy a variety of shareable dishes alongside beer, sake, cocktails, or other beverages. Rather than focusing on a single entrée, diners typically order several small plates to share with the table.
Menus commonly feature fresh sushi and sashimi, grilled skewers, fried appetizers, rice bowls, noodles, and seasonal specialties, making the dining experience ideal for everything from casual dinners to group outings.
This style of dining has continued to grow in popularity across Houston as residents seek more authentic and social culinary experiences.
Planned Location on Briar Forest Drive
The proposed restaurant would be located on Briar Forest Drive, serving residents in the Memorial area and surrounding west Houston neighborhoods.
The corridor is already home to a diverse mix of restaurants, retail centers, and office developments, making it a popular destination for both locals and commuters. A Japanese gastropub would further expand the area's dining options and offer another gathering place for those looking to enjoy sushi and Japanese-inspired dishes closer to home.
Houston's Japanese Dining Scene Continues to Expand
Houston has become one of the country's most diverse food cities, with Japanese cuisine playing an increasingly important role in its restaurant landscape. From neighborhood sushi bars to upscale omakase experiences and casual izakayas, demand for authentic Japanese dining continues to grow across the region.
The potential addition of Izakaya Wa reflects that trend, particularly in west Houston, where new restaurant concepts continue to emerge alongside ongoing residential and commercial development.
Still in the Planning Stages
At this time, the project is based on a state permit filing, and an official opening date has not been announced. As with any proposed development, plans could change before construction or opening.
If approved, however, Memorial-area residents may soon have another option for sushi, Japanese small plates, and a relaxed gastropub atmosphere just minutes from home.
We'll continue to share updates as more information becomes available.
