Sunnyside’s First New Park in Nearly 50 Years Opens in Southeast Houston

by Katie Day

For the first time in nearly five decades, Houston's Sunnyside community has a brand-new park to call its own.

The Hill at Sims Park, a transformative 100-acre greenspace in Southeast Houston, officially opens a new chapter for one of the city's historic neighborhoods. Representing a $30 million investment in public space, recreation, connectivity, and community development, the project is one of the most significant park improvements Sunnyside has seen in generations.

Located along Sims Bayou, the park was designed to provide residents with greater access to outdoor recreation while creating a destination that can be enjoyed by visitors from across Houston.

What You'll Find at The Hill at Sims Park

The new park features nearly five miles of walking and biking trails that wind through the property, giving residents more opportunities to stay active and explore the outdoors close to home.

One of the park's most distinctive features is its 60-foot hilltop pavilion, which offers elevated views of some of Houston's most recognizable landmarks, including Downtown Houston and the Texas Medical Center. In a city known for its relatively flat terrain, the overlook provides a unique perspective that's uncommon in the region.

The park also incorporates public art throughout the space, including six large-scale murals that celebrate the area's culture, history, and community identity.

Expanding Access to Houston's Trail Network

Beyond the park itself, a newly constructed bridge creates a direct connection to the broader Sims Bayou trail system. The addition links visitors to nearly 20 miles of existing trails, making it easier for cyclists, runners, and pedestrians to travel throughout the area without relying on major roadways.

The expanded connectivity is expected to improve access not only to recreation, but also to nearby neighborhoods and community amenities.

A Major Investment for Sunnyside

For longtime residents, The Hill at Sims Park represents more than just a new recreational space. It reflects years of planning and investment aimed at bringing new resources and opportunities to a neighborhood that has historically seen fewer large-scale park developments than other parts of Houston.

As Houston continues to grow, projects like The Hill at Sims Park demonstrate how public infrastructure can enhance quality of life, strengthen community connections, and create destinations that serve residents for decades to come.

Whether you're looking for scenic trail walks, skyline views, public art, or simply a new outdoor space to explore, The Hill at Sims Park is worth adding to your Houston weekend plans.

After nearly 50 years, Sunnyside finally has a new park—and it's making a statement.
